This Saturday we are pleased to offer a new first to the studio!
The Venerable Mujin Sunim, a Buddhist monk ordained
in the Korean Zen tradition will be here to give a Dharma talk. Mujin has been teaching and practicing
Buddhism for over 30 years throughout Asia and Europe, and currently lives in Switzerland. Mujin's talk starts at 2pm this Saturday July 26th with free admittance.
This Sunday will sadly be the end of our Sunday music nights at the studio for the year. We have had so much fun listening to all the bands, dancing and having late night jams. This Sunday we have singer song writer Nick Ryan (We've stole this picture taken by Emily Evans off his facebook page!)
Nick hails from St.John's and was introduced to the Galliott Studios crew one night when he opened up for Matthew Hornell at the Ships Pub. It'll be another great Sunday so be sure not to miss the fun! The show starts at 8:30 and tickets are just $10.
In the heart of Gros Morne National Park lies a unique gem for both tourists and locals to discover: Galliott Studios. A hands-on art gallery and café situated on the waterfront of Woody Point, there's no place like it in the entire park.

Pottery Updates
Its been brought to our attention that there hasn't been any updates on art/craft/pottery in the shop! So here is a bit of an update!
It has been a slow start to pottery this year because Jennifer switched all her clays to a more durable stoneware. This brought on new firing temperatures new glazes and new "surprises". Because of this we haven't been offering pottery lessons, but hope to start it all up again next spring.
We have attached a few pictures of Jennifer's trail and errors. If your in the area drop in and catch her at the back of the shop making a mess!

Hey Rosetta Squared
Its been a ridiculously fun week here at Galliott Studios! The week was packed with great people down for two nights of concerts here in Woody Point at the old Heritage Theater. Hey Rosetta put off two amassing shows and we were lucky enough to not only join in the fun, but also keep some of our favorite musicians fed and caffeinated! The two concerts helped fund raise for the up keep of the Heritage Theater which was built in 1908 as an Orangemens lodge, and is home to an inspiring writers festival Writers at Woody Point that blends the love of story telling through literature and music.
We've attached two pictures of Hey Rosetta's front man Tim Baker helping Jennifer behind the counter.
The band left this morning to ready themselves for their next show in Pemberton, B.C (http://www.heyrosetta.com/tour.html) But not before drummer Phil Maloney dropped in to help us with our local morning broadcast on the Voice of Bonne Bay.
Keeping with the musical week we will be hosting the Peterborough duo Mayhemingways this Sunday at 8pm. Tickets are $10 and can be picked up at the studio or over the phone at 709 453 2142.
Keep checking back for updates on the towns annual regatta where Galliott Studios will be defending their title as woman's dory boat champions as well as details on our Dharma talk with Buddhist monk Mujin Sunim!
Till next time, have a great week!

The Weekend Report!
We're eagerly anticipating another musician tomorrow night- Tom Coombes will be playing at 8 PM in the studio.
Still coming off the high of Sydney's last artist talk at the studio. The weather was hot but the company was good. We've been very lucky to have Sydney and her husband John here so often. They've really become part of the community here- I've memorized their coffee orders and they sometimes drive me from Norris Point to Rocky Harbour for my other job at Java Jacks! We will be very sad to see them go next week, but we're looking forward to meeting the new artists and making even more new friends- which I believe life here is all about.
Some new stock also came in this week- five beautiful pairs of earrings by my sister Beatrice! I've been rocking a pair of them all week.

Fancy. Check out the rest of these bad boys below!
I'm also pretty excited about these beautiful flower watercolours by Amanda Keeping- they're interesting pieces and small enough to adorn any crowded (or uncrowded) surface. Pictures don't quite do the detail justice, so if you get the chance, come by and have a look.
Keep safe tomorrow in whatever weather and have a great Sunday!

Today's Updates
It's been a musical couple of days here at the studio! We had an excellent time with Gary Mills last night and were surprised today with the appearance of Rocket Rocketship on the wharf for an impromptu filming. The picture below features some of our favorite Parks gals with the band, who also performed last night at Lobster Cove Head.
Have a great Canada day!

Summer's Here!
Hi, Galliott Studios fans and friends! Guest blogger and honorary Galliott Girl Evangeline here! I'm back in Newfoundland and working in Rocky Harbour at Java Jacks after nine long months of winter and psyched to be at the studio, drinking inhuman amounts of hot chocolate and goofing around on the pottery wheel. We have tons of exciting events coming up and some really interesting art coming in, so keep checking back all Summer for new reports on the coolest studio this side of the bay.
Of course, our big news this week was our very cool wine tasting. Our first, but certainly not our last! It was catered by the very talented (and friendly!) Jason Nesbitt, the chef at Serenity on the Rocks up at the Red Mantle. Delicious food and wine was enjoyed by all last Friday night.
We also had a group of girl guides in just yesterday, making jewelery and enjoying the lovely, sunny day here. If you have a group of kids, or even just one or two, let us know! With a few days notice, we can offer many different activities for kids to enjoy- so that you can have a cappuccino or two and keep the little ones occupied.
Tonight, we've got a last minute rock concert of our own happening with Gary Mills at 8 PM. Five dollars at the door for entrance, and wine, coffee, and cheese plates available inside in addition to our brand-new lobster rolls, starting at noon every day! They go fast, so come in as soon as you can to grab a bite to eat.
That's all for today, but look for more posts soon! It's shaping up to be a great summer already.

Sydney Lancasters "Boundary|Time|Surface"
This Sunday in Green Point Artist in residence Sydney Lancaster will be constructing her insulation "Boundary|Time|Surface." Sydney's piece will
"explore the arbitrary nature of the geological boundary at Green Point, in Gros Morne National
Park. This
work draws attention to our inclination to create arbitrary divisions,
as tools to define,
manage, and understand expanses of space and time"
Sydney explained her process in the following steps...
1. John and I will be onsite at Green Point by 9 am, latest, to get set up; high tide is at 8 am, so we will be able to access the Cambrian-Ordovician boundary strata and that bit of beach by then.
1a. Volunteers will arrive at 9:30, and we'll do a short briefing.
2.
We will be setting up two cameras onsite: one on the grassy cliff above
(for video), and one on the shore (for time lapse stills) . There will
be a two more cameras available for stills and video from various
locations as well.
3. Construction will begin at 10 am; we need to have the sculpture completed about an hour after the tide turns (should be about 3 pm, since low tide is 2:05pm)
4.
We will stay on the rocks and continue with the documentation until the
tide comes back in and the sculpture is toppled. (high tide in the
evening is about 9 pm). Folks are welcome to stay onsite with us if they like!

Spring 2014!
Spring is finally here and the Galliott Studio crew are supper excited! We have bands lined up for every Sunday in July, Artist talks, new author readings and more!!
We started this season off with an Artist show of resent works by Kristen Oravec.
Kristen (or Kris as we know her) is a working visual artist, geologist and parks naturalist here in Gros Morne National Park. Her show " This Particular Silence" went up on the 30th of May and will be up until the 13th of June. We would like to thank everyone that came out to help use celebrate the opening!
"Each place holds its own mood and silences. Bonne Bay and the neighboring Tablelands has its own particular silence that lingers in your belly long after you have left, a cool and reserved quietude. This cool stillness, which reveals no secrets, seeps slowly into ancient houses here, as slowly weather becoming more part of the land then artifact.
I attempt to evoke that sense of cool quietude which one finds here through paint, the most fluid and silent of mediums. Hot colours are tamed and cooled by the use of strong horizontals. The use of restricted palettes and strong horizontals allow the viewer to settle into the sense of unpeopled silence, a place without cell phones, deadlines and iPads, an edge of reality where the soul and the land meet."
