Bruce

Here's an interesting Galliott Studios fact for you: Jennifer loves Bruce Springsteen.

Whilst tidying the ceramics area at Galliott Studios, we discovered a casette of Bruce's Born in the USA. Jenn's dad had given us a new CD player just days before, and it included a casette deck. Coincidence? We thought not!

So now our casette is all burnt out from overplay, the guys at Open Mic with Mike had a beautiful rendition of 'I'm on Fire' and still the love is strong. (Open Mic at the Cat Stop http://www.bontours.ca/catstop/)

Enjoy it here. We also like seeing Bruce in his overalls! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lrpXArn3hII

If anyone wanted to drop in a copy of Born in the USA in a more durable format, we'd like that. Jenn needs cheering up, she fell off a ladder today.

Olympics

Last night was the opening of the London Olympics. We tried to watch the ceremony, but only managed to catch highlights. It was still enough for Liv to get all misty eyed and patriotic. But also completely baffled. Maybe it would have made more sense if we'd seen the whole ceremony!

Here's an image from our friends at Laikingland (http://www.laikingland.co.uk/) They're an incredible company that makes automata and kinetic sculpture. And they have a special olympics image of their applause machines that echos the olympics rings. Perfect for cheering on your national team!

We'll definitely be watching the full ceremony on the internet. If you wanted to give Team GB and all the Canadian athletes a little cheer, we'd like that!

Superstar DJs

You may not know this, but we Galliott Studios girls have a radio show. And it's pretty great! We think so anyway.

Every Thursday we hop on the boat over to Norris Point and do our show on Voice of Bonne Bay radio. It's a community radio station, but you can listen online too. We've had listeners from as far the UK and Australia!

Last night we had a chat, played some music and interviewed Jacqueline Bradley, the new artist in residence here in Gros Morne National Park. Her work's amazing (we have a little bit of art envy) have a look at her website here http://www.jacquelinebradley.com.au/

Here's a photo of Jenn interviewing Jack on air!

Why not listen in next week? Thursdays 6-8pm. VOBB is 95.9FM if you're in the Bonne Bay area, otherwise listen through the website http://www.vobb.org/

So tune in guys! As long as you don't mind the odd gap. We're still beginners!

Shark bike!

We've just had the pleasure of watching the Woody Point bike parade! As part of the Bonne Bay Regatta all the kids decorate their bikes and ride through town. There were lots of balloons, a Hawaiian paradise, a princess in a carriage and even a shark! All on bikes! Check out the pictures.

Planes

Today's regatta events included a kid's craft workshop at Galliott Studios. We were mobbed by a host of kids wanting to paint wind chimes, yoyos and toy planes. After a little rearranging of furniture, we were good to go! Here's a photo of them painting away:

Just a quick post today - there's lots of cleaning up to be done!

Basque whalers!

Our friend Phil Lichti is a videographer. He's working on a very interesting project at the moment and asked the Galliott Studios girls to help out with some sound bites. We happily agreed. So Jenn spent a hilarious time splashing around in a dory and making Basque Whaler sounds. Intrigued? You should be! We have a sneak preview for you right here And here's a photo of action Phil on a hike with Liv
We'll let you know when Phil finishes the project so you can have a look!

Ugly Stick

Today is the first day of the Bonne Bay Regatta! We're all very excited for a week of activities, dancing and great food. The festivities kicked off with an ugly stick making workshop right here at Galliott Studios. Mike Madigan dropped in and armed a host of friends with mop handles, beer bottle caps and screw drivers to make the jewel of Newfoundland instruments, the ugly stick. And it wasn't just for kids! Here's some photos of our lovely participants learning to play their new sticks.

New look

As you may notice, the Galliott Studios blog has had a make over! Our snazzy new look is down to our friend Jillian. She's a fantastic artist based in Corner Brook. Jillian fixed our layout and rectified lots of problems with repeated or strangely sized images. She's a technological goddess. She's also pretty camera shy, so it took a while to get a photo. But here it is!
Thanks Jillian!

Parties!

Here at Galliott Studios we love parties. They make us very happy. We have a shop guitar and always appreciate an impromptu jam session, but we also organise parties for people. Our friend Anja de Jong has just finished her time as Artist in Residence here in Gros Morne National Park and she wanted a little farewell shindig.

Here's a couple of photos of the fun times and delicious home made (and home grown!) food here at Galliott Studios.

Good luck to Anja, and hopefully we'll see you again in the future. Here's a link to Anja's website. She's an incredible photographer and her work is well worth a peek! http://www.anjadejong.nl/

A few great nights!

Well, we're a happy lot at Galliott Studios! Why? Because Gros Morne Summer Music is back for this summers wonderful performances. Last night we were lucky enough to see The Once. They were fantastic! Liv had never heard of them before but now she's an avid fan! Check out their website here http://theonce.ca/site/ We bought their CD, and it's great. But they're incredible live. If you get chance, go see them!

Here's a photo of The Once reflected in the posters in the Woody Point Heritage Theatre. Our friend Tom Cochrane from Corner Brooker took the photo. It's pretty awesome.

See some more here  http://cornerbrooker.com/

Tonight we're going to see Elliott Brood. The word on the street is that there's been an Elliott Brood wedding today, so it's bound to be a great night! We're certainly lucky ladies. Here's their website. So you can get good and jealous that we're seeing them tonight! http://www.elliottbrood.ca/

And here's a link to the Gros Morne Summer Music website. It's well worth a look, and you can buy tickets online. We certainly recommend seeing lots of these shows! http://www.gmsm.ca/

Galliott Studios was filled with music and a good time was had by all! Here's a few photos of Woody Point's new harmonica orchestra:

Bell of a problem!

Today we had a disaster at Galliott Studios. A fish truck drove past and ripped out our telephone line! Jenn borrowed a bike and set off to find help. Luckily some helpful guys from Bell Alliant were working down the street and answered our pleas!

A big thanks to our saviours from Bell!

p.s. Andrew Roberts, we have your bike!

A nice day to be out in the boat

It's a beautiful day here in Bonne Bay. The sun is shining, the weather is warm and the bay is flat as glass. A great day to be out in a boat, we think! From kayaks to speed boats, here's some photos of people enjoying their day on the water.

We've also spotted a couple of whales in the bay, but Liv isn't quick enough with her camera! Fingers crossed everyone enjoying the bay will get to see them today!

Mustache Mugs!

Scared of dipping your tache in your cappuccino? Well, fear not! Because Galliott Studios have the answer. Our new Mustache Mugs will protect your facial topiary from all kinds of tasty drinks!

Here's Jenn making a few. Check back tomorrow to see the final, glazed products!

Spies?

Today a cruise ship is visiting Woody Point! The ship has a Russian name (we can't read it, it's in Russian) and flies a Russian flag. Rumour has it that the ship was a Russian spy boat before it was converted into for cruising! It's now filled with American tourists...a strange mix? We think so!

Introducing the Galliott Studios girls!

Us Galliott Studios girls just realised that we've put out a few posts that include our names, but haven't introduced ourselves! So here we go!

Jennifer owns Galliott Studios. She is a multidisciplinary artist, but her true love is textiles. She studied in Alberta and Nova Scotia before heading home to Newfoundland. She's a Woody Point girl born and bred and is very happy to spend here summers here at Galliott Studios! In the past, Jenn has travelled and lived in New Zealand, and has a number of works displayed across the North Island. Her latest tapestry is awesome. You can have a look, it's in the Devon House in the Craft Council 40th anniversay show. In 2011 she won the award for the Craft Council's award for Exceptional Achievement by a Young Craft Person. She was also nominated for CBC Emerging Artist in the Newfoundland and Labrador Arts Council's 2012 awards. Jenn likes ray guns, shiny things and enjoys climbing trees.

Olivia is the new girl at Galliott Studios. She works mainly with metalwork and jewellery; and she loves making pretty things out of rocks and bones. She does lots of work on the blog and likes putting new things on her website! Check it out here http://www.oliviaball.com/.  Liv is British and has exhibited her work across the UK.She first came to Woody Point last summer as Artist in Residence for Gros Morne National Park. She's freelanced for a few arts companies back in England and worked in Europe. She's got a great Yorkshire accent but is constantly on the look out for bears.

Here's a photo of us having fun in front of the studio! Liv's on the left, Jenn on the right.

A little bit of history

We thought you might be interested to hear a bit of background about Galliott Studios.

Once upon a time Galliott Studio's was a fishing shed belonging to Jenn's Grandfather Thomas Galliott. The family Galliott used the shed as a fishing stage, and to store nets and lobster pots. Here's a picture of Pop Galliott! (He's the one in red)

The building itself is over 100 years old, The shop was originally across the road from it's current position on Water Street but in 1922 a huge fire ripped through Woody Point, destroying most of the waterfront. Many buildings were moved in the town to fill up the waterfront positions.

4 years ago Jenn and her dad transformed the building into an art studio and built the beautiful wharf on the back of the building. The back of the original building had been torn off by sea ice, but we like the new one better anyways!

Pretty neat eh?

A Challenge!

All of us here in Woody Point will be celebrating the Bonne Bay Regatta in the last week of July. It's sure to be a week of fun times and great events. And us Galliott Studios girls have a challenge for you!

Now, we're not great at rowing. But we are pretty good at dressing up! So, we would like to challenge you to come down on Saturday 28th July and take part in the rowing race in the best fancy dress costume you can create. There are men's and women's races and each team needs two people. So find a buddy, make some costumes and practise your rowing.  We might even buy you an ice cream if you're the best dressed team!

Harmonica class!

Kids classes are starting again here at Galliott Studios! Every Tuesday at 2pm there will be kids art workshops. We'll be letting you know what's coming up both here and on our facebook page (http://www.facebook.com/groups/109444492190/)

Next Tuesday 16th July, the wonderful Mike Madigan will be holding a harmonica workshop. Spaces are limited to 6 people and they will no doubt go fast! If you'd like to book a place, call us on 453 2142. If you have a harmonica in the key of C, feel free to drop by with it without booking.

You might know Mike from the sharecroppers. If not, check them out here http://www.thesharecroppers.net/

See you on Tuesday!

Snacks!

The Galliott Studio team thought you might like to know a little bit more about our new food menu. All of our cakes and the bread for our sandwiches are baked by Andrew. He's a food scientist, baker, fisherman and founding member of the band Stinkum! A man of many talents!

Through popular demand, we've started serving a selection of fancy cheese! Currently we have Danish blue, Normandie brie, boursin, 5 year aged cheddar, 2 year aged cheddar and babybell. We also have some delicious crackers to enjoy with your cheese plate selections.

We're also now serving lobster rolls. Check out the pictures, they look pretty delicious and taste even better. Don't take our word for it though, come down and try one!

Canada Day

Ok, so we're late. But here's some photo's of the Galliott Studios gang enjoying a jam with friends on the wharf and some tastey Canada Day treats. We hope you had a good one!

Enjoying the wharf with friends

Today is the first rainy day to break the spell of beautiful sunshine and warm sea breezes. A perfect day to start a blog!

Here's some photos of people enjoying last night's sunshine and gorgeous views on the wharf here at Galliott Studios.
