You are invited to a tea party!

The second annual Woody Point Tea Party will take place on July 20th, 2-4pm at the Woody Point Heritage Theatre.

The Tea Party is a great time. We all dress up really nicely, and make ourselves the fanciest of hats! Cookies, cake, sandwiches and tea, what could be better? Why, supporting the Woody Point library, of course!

Proceeds go towards supporting our fantastic little library. And we couldn't be happier to be a part of it.

All of the Galliott Studios crew will be attending the Tea Party, so the Studio will be closed at that time.

We're pretty excited, and we hope that you'll join us! Entry is by donation, and everyone is welcome.Galliott Studioshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05277201402926903161noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5930015904679839092.post-80385459916225448362019-06-22T06:42:00.000-07:002019-06-22T06:55:19.813-07:00The sculpins of Lovers' LaneJenn has been making more sculpins! And these ones are pretty special. In place of regular glazes, these little fellas have a coat of local clay giving colour and pattern to their surfaces.

Bonne Bay has lots of lovely clay deposits, and Jenn is an expert at finding the best sources and digging them out! She's spent quite some time playing with local clay, and the outcomes are always fabulous.

It's possible to make small pieces, like pinch pots, from our local clay. But it's pretty unstable. So Jenn's favourite way to use it is as a slip to cover and colour the high quality stoneware that she uses in all Galliott Studios ceramics.

Unpacking sculpins from the kiln is always a treat, but today we got an extra fun little surprise. Jenn dug clay from a new spot in Woody Point, and we were excited to find that it's a much different colour to previous experiments! Previously, we used clay from Crawley's Cove, which gives a rich, dark brown colour. This clay is from Lovers' Lane, and has a soft, terracotta-brown colour.

We're in love with this clay, and with the wee sculpins adorned with it!

Lots of fun projects and pottery ideas ready for the spring when the work space warms up and the snow is away from the door!
Happy 2018!!Galliott Studioshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05277201402926903161noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5930015904679839092.post-73649870218972814162017-09-01T19:22:00.000-07:002017-09-01T19:22:09.532-07:00Winding Down in 2017Can you believe summer is nearly over? Seems like just yesterday we were opening our doors every morning to the clear days of early June. But, as they say, all good things must come to an end, so we must wait through the winter for the next fun-filled, extremely busy summer season. However, the shop isn't closing up just yet (good news for all you who try and evade the most hectic portion of the year!)

Expect to see the "open" sign propped up in the window at least until the end of September. There is little difference in our hours of operation as well, exempting a few key details. First, after Labour Day weekend, we will no longer open up on Monday. Just to give the girls a bit more of a break after all the hustle and bustle of the summer, you know? Second, we will be closing earlier than usual; lately, it's been around 6:00 - instead of 7:00 - when the door gets locked and the lights shut off. This schedule will persist until we close down permanently at the end of September.

Just because closing is coming around the corner, doesn't mean you should stop following us on Instagram! Throughout the fall and into the winter, Jen is planning on advertising earrings, jewelry, and (possibly) other homemade products to sell after the Studio has been locked up and winterized. This'll be a good way to grab some of her work after the shop has closed. Maybe some early Christmas shopping, anyone?

That's all for this year from the Galliott Studios blog, folks! Hope every visitor to our beautiful studio and amazing park enjoyed their stay. And, most importantly, if anyone needs the brownie recipe for those oh-so-decadent gluten-free treats, don't hesitate to contact us! Thanks again for an amazing season. :-)
One of our girls who stand behind the counter finishes up with us in anticipation for lower numbers, and Jen starts making more pottery to fill the gaping hole in stock the festival leaves. However, this doesn't mean we won't keep bringing you entertainment as we trail away into colder September.

This Sunday (August 27th) we have one of our final musical guests of the year: Rube and Rake! As a band, the duo began playing and producing music under this alias in 2014. Josh Sandu and Andrew Laite shortly thereafter released a short disc of their own music and began touring cross-Canada. In their off time, they quietly worked on their craft in the duo's hometown of St. John's.

1. Plan Your Writer's Experience
Even though the festival has already begun, it's not too late to schedule the rest of your week. To alleviate the stress of choosing your events for each day, pick them in advance! For booking tickets, all you need to do is go online to the Writer's of Woody Point website (http://www.writersatwoodypoint.com) and book your tickets! The ticket portal can be found in the upper menu bar. By doing this, you save yourself the last-minute confusion and panic of trying to decide on one of the shows going on around town. It's also wise to pace yourself: don't try and attend too many events in one day, else you'll be gassed the following morning and won't enjoy anything upcoming.

2. Stay Hydrated
One essential for absolutely everyone at Writer's this week? Staying hydrated. And no, alcohol doesn't count, either. With all the action and excitement throughout the day, it can be easy to forget to meet this daily essential adequately. You'll need the standard two litres plus some to stave off the negative affects of dehydration. If you have a day where you're running around from dawn 'til dusk, the more the merrier. Especially with all the amazing beer and coffee available throughout the town, compensating for the lost moisture in your body is key. The same rule applies to staying fed; eat at least three meals a day to stay fueled up and ready to party! A healthy balance of proteins, carbohydrates, and fats is recommended.

3. Sleep!
Another bare necessity that often garters less attention during this busy time, this one's critical if you plan on making it to the halfway point of the week without sleep deprivation. While you're tempted to stay out that extra hour or two into the morning, or to have that last drink or three, attempting this early on in the week will spell doom for your alertness. Save these late nights for the latter end of the festival, or pick and choose which nights you'd rather lose sleep on so you can compensate later. Either way, if you don't manage your sleep, you won't be able to handle Writer's Festival for long without conking out for a 4-hour nap at the wrong time. Believe me, it's happened before.

4. Focus on Enjoying It
This tip is a little more abstract and harder to obtain, but nevertheless, just as important. Sometimes, with how busy the week can be, it's difficult to stay focussed on the main objective of the festival. Don't get too caught up with planning your trip too specifically (hourly plans may be taking it a bit too far) that you don't enjoy the content displayed. Likewise, focus on enjoying the festival as a vacation to rejuvenate yourself. All the great music, intriuging readers, and dramatic performances each offer something unique for you to enjoy.

5. Mingle
Writer's Festival has a focus on incredibly social events. To get the fullest from your experiences, it's best to get out there and talk to everyone! The spirit of rural Newfoundland seems to imbue all the attendees, so many people will be more than welcoming of a chat. Plus, events will be much more enjoyable when you're experiencing it with people you know! Especially if you plan on attending the festival for years to come, getting familiar with regulars will assure you always know someone - and even have a free place to stay - during this busy week.

6. Get a Coffee
Finding that no matter how much you sleep at night, or how well you pace yourself throughout the week, you're still tired? There's an easy, locally-available fix to that: Galliott Studios coffee! While no permanent fix, the espresso and caffeine in some of our beverages will give you that temporary boost to get through the next few hours. It only helps it's irresistibly delicious, from avid coffee lovers to the novice.

If you follow these basic guidelines to Writer's Festival, you should escape Woody Point with no deteriorations of mind and body, an uplifted spirit, and a few amazing experiences under your belt. Enjoy your Writer's Festival, and be sure to send our Instagram (@galliottstudios1) your favourite festival photos!
Wednesday, August 16th - On the second official day of the festival, Galliott Studio first hosts an event. Following the second portion of the opening concert, Jen is hosting late-night karaoke that begins at 11:30 PM. If you're looking to continue the party late into the night, there's no where else better than singing your heart out with us!

Thursday, August 17th - Thursday morning kicks off a series of morning readings by various individuals throughout Writers Festival. Our premier speaker is Susan Perly, a Canadian journalist and fiction writer. Her work has gotten her on the longlist for the Scotiabank Giller Prize and given her national recognition, while she herself has worked with organizations like CBC Radio. Her reading is sure to intriuge anyone with a curious mind.

Friday, August 18th - The halfway point of the festival is kicked off with another reading; this time from Eva Crocker, who is best known for her most recent publication, Barrelling Forward. From an author who's newest work has drawn outstanding praise, be sure to expect a good story or two! Later in the evening, we're also hosting a musical performance by Steve Maloney, a performer native to Newfoundland. Steve's first release with his group Steve Maloney and the Wandering Kind, succeeded by an Eastern Canada tour to numerous music festivals, drew the eyes and ears of the east coast music scene. In 2014, he was awarded the Rising Star of the Year award from MusicNL, and hasn't disappointed since. Steve's earned a reputation as a musical chameleon with a velvet voice. While he tackles folk, classical, and contemporary pop music, the one link between his music is rich and soulful delivery. He currently has another album under construction, so why not stop by and see if he gives us a preview? Price is to be determined, so stay tuned.

Saturday, August 19th - Another day, another reading at Galliott Studios! This time around, we have Dennis Lee, doing a kid-friendly reading! From the highly-acclaimed author of Alligator Pie, your kids are sure to enjoy whatever is in store. Later in the afternoon - around 2:00 PM - we're glad to welcome Anita Best and Sandy Morris back into the Studio for yet another musical exhibition. From some of the mainstays in Newfoundland's music scene, you're sure to recieve an amazing performance.

Sunday, August 20th - The final morning reading at the Studio is facilitated by Robert Chafe, a Canadian playwright who's long list of works garnered him numerous awards and reknown. Robert's creative touch is sure to make an interesting showing for all ages. Last but not least, a collection of local writers are completing another reading, beginning around 4:00 PM. While the participants of the latter reading are unannounced as of yet, it's sure to be yet another outstanding selection.
It seems like only a short while ago we were opening up for the summer season! Nevertheless, that only gives you a better reason to get out and experience all there is to offer.

First up, if you're just visiting Gros Morne, why not leave with a handcrafted memory? Jen and the girls in the shop are always hard at work making new pottery items for you. Our jellyfish are especially frequent sellers, and as was previously mentioned in an earlier blog post, it's our goal to spread them around the world, and find out where they are. But, besides the project they are a part of, these ceramic creatures make a perfect decoration to any reading nook, dorm window, or anything in between. Fresh-from-the-kiln mugs are also constantly in production, though sell out almost as fast as they're made. And of course, there is always the medley of local artwork, food products, and clothing for sale.

August is also the most exciting month for Bonne Bay South: between Gros Morne Summer Music ramping up, and Writer's Festival in a few short weeks, there's lots for a visiting traveler or interested local to participate in. The unique performances and thrilling music appear at a higher frequency in the area's unique setting, so it's much easier to catch one of the shows by the end of the month. There's also always karaoke night every Saturday night at Galliott Studios as well, for those looking to sing their hearts out. :)

Excited as we are for August? Be sure to enjoy it while the days are still sunny and warm!

Tonight, we have Chef Jason from the Bonne Bay Inn presenting us with a unique culinary experience: halibut ramen. Very soon, local ingredients will add a twist to a traditional Japanese dish that’ll surely make your tastebuds happy! Most importantly, the event is BYOB - bring your own bowl. Chef Jason will have full control of Galliott Studios as he presents us with a culinary experience, so be sure to get down as soon as possible. :)

Tomorrow (Wednesday, July 26th) we’re having another musical appearance in the form of Earle and Coffin. This duo is one of Newfoundland’s most prevalent young groups, winning national awards and gaining high praise. Their music draws inspiration from blues greats, such as Robert Johnson and Muddy Waters. Soulful vocals and skilled guitar playing are but two aspects of an artfully constructed performance. Need your blues fill? Then visit us here at the Studio! If you buy in advance, tickets are $10; if you wait and purchase at the door, they’ll be $15.

Coming from Tuck's Bee Better Farm Inc., we now carry a trio of delicious treats. First up is their staple: honey! Using honey from Newfoundland bees, it's mixed with cranberries (to increase the level of antioxidants and improve flavor) and bottled. Because Newfoundland is one of the few places in the world that does not treat its honeybees with antibiotics or chemicals, this honey is some of the purest in the world! We're also a vendor for their new honey-infused cranberry juice and partridge berry sauce - can you say tasty? Either is a great, organic addition to spice up any meal.

Our favorite part of Tuck's products is that they're entirely local! Everything in their products comes from on the island, and most of it - if not all - is created or pollinated by their bees. The honey we sell in the shop is even a mix of both Bonne Bay and Grand Falls-Windsor bee's honey!

We're also announcing a new Instagram project! From henceforth, we encourage all visitors who have purchased something from us, to share their photos of where said products are now; whether it be across the Atlantic or down the street, we want to see where our products - especially our cherished little jellyfish - end up. :)

We'll "bee" waiting to see what everyone has to share!
This week at Galliott Studios, we’re kicking it off with a bang! We welcome Peter Willie Youngtree underneath our roof to perform this Sunday night. It’s only $10 for entrance, so why not spend the evening with us and an amazing musician?

Peter is a Newfoundland artist, having grown up in a family of traditional folk singers. His style portrays his ancestry, utilizing old folk and country motifs in combination with modern sounds. Peter’s lyrics are praised as well, having been called “contemplative” and “vividly written”. This unique style has earned him high praise, put his music on top of the charts, and allowed him to perform with famous artists. Together with his backing band, “The Blooms,” Peter is now recording his second album.

Five Brothers Artisan Cheese has grown into the sole producer of cheese in Newfoundland and Labrador. They create and sell a selection of fine product, including both aged and fresh cheeses. And, most importantly, they use 100% Newfoundland milk - staying local!

In the shop, we carry four of Five Brother's products, all as tasty and scrumptious as the last. Most popular are the Bergy Bits cheese curds, which everyone loves pairing with a homemade poutine. The curds usually sell out fast, so visit as soon as the latest shipment comes in! You won't regret it.

We also carry some of their block cheeses, including the White Fleet Queso Fresco, Avalon Cheddar, and Logy Bay Jack with Chilis. Each has its own characteristics which make it unique and delicious. You can buy it at the shop in a variety of sizes, and bring it home, or eat it straight off a cheese plate in-house! We're the only place on the west coast you can find this local brand.

You can find Five Brothers Artisan Cheese on many major social media platforms, including Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook. Just look for @5broscheese, or search 5 Brothers Cheese, and you should find them.

On another note, you can now reach out to Galliott Studios on Instagram! Send us a photo of the shop, our products, or yourself enjoying the atmosphere, and you could end up on our page - just DM @galliottstudios1 on Instagram with your chosen photograph. We'll post it with a tag to you!
This year, we've got a few new, exciting things that you'll love.

First up, we have beer from the Western Newfoundland Brewing Company on tap! Two taps are fixed brews with the names "Killdevil Pale Ale," and "Wild Cove Cream Ale." Tasty, eh? Our third tap will be more exciting; it'll be where we try out a plethora of new flavours throughout the summer. Anything new and delicious the brewmasters cook up will flow first from Galliott Studios' taps. Come down now and again to see what Jenn has in store!
This coming Wednesday (August 10th) at 7pm we will be hosting an artist talk with the new artist in residence.

Meet and chat with Gros Morne National Park artists-in-residence Caroline Cloutier and Martin Désilets (Montreal, QC). After their 6 weeks in residency here these two photographers will discuss how the parks landscape has inspired them and how they used the natural light and fog to shoot new photographs and video.

The artists would like to thank The Rooms, Gros-Morne National Park and the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec for their support, Kirsten Ovarec and Cédric Davignon. Martin Désilets would also like to thank the Conseil des arts de Longueuil.

Caroline Cloutier — I am interested in the reflective function that inheres in specular and photographic images, and in their ability to evoke virtual spaces. During my strolls through the park, motifs will be selected for their textural poetry and for plays of light that they can set off at different times of day: an expanse of water, snow, cloud cover, or fog. This residency will be an opportunity to begin a new phase in my photographic research, using the mirror as a deconstructive device and as a way of staging the motifs that make up the park landscape.

Martin Désilets — My recent practice rests on an extensive examination of photography's fundamentals, and an exploration of its misuse(s). During my stay at Gros Morne Park, I will base my work on the territory’s singular, ever-changing ambient light and colours. At a remove from landscape art, isolating tenuous and ephemeral abstract events will enable me to subtly convey the park’s geological characteristics, its luminosity, and its immensity.

As mentioned in the last post, the back pottery area has finally been insulated! So all the ideas tacked to the back wall can be completed in warmth.

Along with new hand painted pottery, as of mid-July-ish there will be a local beer on tap! The Western Newfoundland Brewing Company has just started and we are the official tap room. How did we manage to become the tap room for such a great local venture you ask? Well It helps that Jenn is part owner of the new set up. Because as busy as the summers are, there is a ridiculous lack of winter employment in these parts. We are hoping this helps with some winter growth.

This week has been a mixture of shop insulating, kiln firing, and coming up with exciting ideas! Theres something comforting about the white blanket of snow covering everything and a storm outside that makes all of the world seem to disappear!

Tucked in the shop with the storm doors up, a person can sing loudly and even dance without the outside world being any the wiser, all while artistic messes happen.

The messes start like every mess, with good intention. I had meant to spend the week insulating the back pottery area. The pottery area is one of the last places to be insulated and because it faces the water when the wind is blowing the cold air funnels through the shop. Another thing to note is the fact you could see between the floor boards in that area down to the icy water which on stormy days and high-tides wind and waves jump between the boards! brrrr!

So the pottery area was stripped and insulation was put down and its all being covered over with plywood which will be painted.

For the last few weeks we have had schools of herring and mackerel in the bay making the water almost bubble! The sea gulls have been spread out along the surface with eagles perched on the neighbouring trees and seals resting with full bellies on the ice pans! Yet, most exciting of all is the whales!
We have seen Humpbacks, Fin whales and Minkies so far! Most of the activity (that we know of) has been at the end of the south arm of Bonne Bay, which we know as "Up the bottom".

If you come up for a drive bring some snacks and maybe a thermos of something hot! If you're around town after 2pm the local legion is a great place to warm up and have a coffee, beer or chips!
(At the moment we aren't open, but we are currently insulating the pottery area! Updates to come in the next post!)
Guests at Thom Coombs' show this past week got a tasty surprise: "Goat cheese, dandelion trickle and dried pansy crustini" followed by "smoked seal and fiddlehead pesto on toast". YUM! You can't beat good music combined with good food.

Matthew Hornell is no stranger to Woody Point but you are in for a serious treat this time around. In addition to Matthew's original folk songs, he and sideman Andrew Sneddon will be playing some songs from their newly released bluegrass EP THIS FRIDAY at Galliott Studios. I was lucky enough to see them play at the LSPU Hall in St. John's this past week and it was SO good and SO fun. The EP was recorded live in a Nova Scotia church and the jacket was letter-press printed and hand-folded. That's commitment, folks! This little gem is only available at live shows or Fred's Records in St. John's, so take this opportunity to get yourself a copy.

In other news, the Woody Point Regatta was a huge success, and tons of little crafters came out to Galliott Studios. The craft was tricky but with some great help from parents, everyone was able to take home a pretty homemade flower!
